Motivation

Super Pepe and the attack of the Pixions is a solo hobbist project that I started 5 years ago. After some small game projects, mainly for learning/curiosity purposes, I decided to go one step further and develop a full game.

The idea of the game comes because I was looking in the Google Play for a game similar to Cabal or Blood Bros, but all the games that I found was touch oriented (to shoot to a target you have to touch on the screen and I'm too old for that sh**t). At that moment, what I really wanted to play was a shooting gallery game with at least on-screen controls, or even better with gamepad support so I decided to develop my own game.

With the main idea written down and the tought that in a couple of years I could finish the game... well... may be a bit more (I didn't take into account some minor things like buying a house, getting married, etc...) I started this journey that is taking its final path to the release date (this September, motivated mainly because I'm going to be father on December... yeeah!!!... that's a huge motivation!!!).

Gameplay

To control the character you have a joystick that allow you to move left/ right while you are not shooting and also move the aim sight in any direction. This mechanic was tipical in the arcade games that I've used as an inspiration. When you are shooting, the character can't be moved but the aim sight can be moved. You also have another button to slide/ roll to move faster the character helping you to avoid the bullets from the enemies.

While you destroy enemies, their drop differents items that can help you like:

  • Potions that provide a temporally power-up.
  • Coins to improve the effects of power-ups or weapons.
  • Hearts that increase your life.
  • Bullets of different weapons
  • Letters that increase your fire rate until you get Super Pepe and unleash the power of Super Pepe.

When you finish a stage, you get a start for it but you can get two more:

  • One for destroy every single Pixion (the enemies).
  • Another for get through the stage without receiving a shoot.

This stars unlocks the power-ups and the weapons. When you unlock the first selectable weapon two addcional controls appears (two arrows) that allow you to switch between the weapons (if you have bullets).

Some of this mechanis were not present in the games that I used as reference (inventory, upgrades, letters that increase fire rate) plus others that I hope you can discover and enjoy once the game was finally realease!!!
