Educational games have two aspects to refine.
1: What are you trying to teach?
2: How is that information directly practical to mastering the game?
A couple pieces of edutainment worth studying are the SWAT series and Simulator games (Flight, Truck, Bus, and etc., obviously not Goat). One of the better examples is Giant Machines 2017, unexpectedly enjoyed by NerdCubed.
I mention SWAT because its scoring system adheres strictly to police protocol, meaning that the player has to learn said protocol in order to beat the game.
